1. MODULE OBJECTIVES:
  • To enhance the capacity of  HRM personnel in the training and other human talent specialists to build a robust professional program in preparing and conducting scientific based defensible interviews for employees-to-be in their organizations.
  • To equip trainees with skills in interviewing processes, tactics, methods and strategies in human resources recruitment and retention.
  • To familiarize trainees with field research interview concepts, ethics, and planning.
  • To strengthen trainees’ capacities in the knowledge and use of methodological field research interview tools in different environments.
  • To build the trainees’ capabilities to design smart field research interview questions and plans.
  • To arm trainees with the tools for field data analysis and reporting.

2. MODULE BRIEF DESCRIPTION

The module is part of the research and consultancy course. The course comprises five modules each of which complements one another. “Interviewing: The Art of Science” focuses on designing and conducting interviews for both hiring employees and field research work. It involves human present and interactions between the client and interviewer/s.

The first part of the module elaborates the recruitment process of human talent for institutions; from designing ToRs, adverts, and interviewing. It shows how to, for instance use:

  1. job descriptions to build  structured interviews,
  2. questions to guide interviews,
  3.  a behavioral-based approach to select the best hire, and
  4. Award interview marks based on measurable evidence to avoid backlashes from problematic candidates.

The second part of this module guides the trainee on tactics, ethics and strategies used in conducting field interviews in basic research, applied research, evaluation studies, ethnographic research; collecting and analyzing interview materials as well as interpreting interview finding

Employment related Interviewing

Session 1

Designing a smart Job Description (JD) and Terms of Reference(ToRs)  for a new hire

Session 2

How to generate and refine potential interview questions from the JD and ToRs.

 

 

Session 3

Pretesting and finalizing interview questions generated in session 2(Exercise)

Session 4

Setting criteria for long-listing; Long listing and sifting out the best CVs that are most relevant to the post; shortlisting based on  defensible criteria(individual assignment)

Session 5

 
  • Setting criteria interviewers(individual trainee assignment and presentation)

 

  • Identifying competent professionals to constitute a gendered interview panel;

 

  • Assigning and discussing roles of each panel member; refining and sharing interview questions
 

Session 6

 
  • Conducting interviews(group exercise);
  • Addressing the issue of gut feeling in interviews using “ Attitude Meter”
  • Selecting the best and hiring the candidate  in line with acceptable ethical standards and laws in place.
