RMI Reaffirms Commitment to unity and remembrance during 32nd Genocide Commemoration

On 22 May 2026, Rwanda Management Institute (RMI) joined Rwandans and the international community in commemorating the 32nd Anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The commemoration activities were held in Ntarama Sector, Bugesera District, as part of the institution’s commitment to honoring the victims, supporting survivors, and preserving the memory of the Genocide.

The event brought together RMI management and staff for a series of remembrance activities, including an educational session on the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi, support extended to a genocide survivor from Ntarama Sector, and a visit to the Ntarama Genocide Memorial to pay tribute to the victims and reflect on the importance of remembrance and historical awareness.

During the educational session, participants reflected on the historical circumstances that led to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and discussed the lessons that can be drawn from Rwanda’s past. Emphasis was placed on the collective responsibility of citizens and institutions to uphold national unity, foster reconciliation, and safeguard the remarkable progress the country has achieved over the past three decades.

Speaking during the commemoration, the Head of Research and Consultancy at Rwanda Management Institute noted that visiting genocide memorial sites plays a vital role in preserving historical memory and strengthening efforts to prevent genocide and combat genocide ideology.

“The history of Ntarama, and the Genocide against the Tutsi in general, reminds us of the importance of understanding where our country has come from in order to safeguard the progress achieved today. It also reminds each one of us of our responsibility in building unity and reconciliation among all Rwandans," he said.

The representative of IBUKA in Ntarama Sector, Mrs. Mathilde UMWANANKABANDI, commended Rwanda Management Institute for demonstrating solidarity with genocide survivors during the commemoration period. She emphasized that such initiatives reflect the important role public institutions play in preserving the memory of the Genocide and in preventing and combating genocide ideology.

The commemoration concluded with participants laying wreaths and paying tribute to more than 5,000 victims laid to rest at the Ntarama Genocide Memorial. The visit provided an opportunity for reflection and remembrance, while reaffirming the participants’ commitment to promoting unity, peace, reconciliation, and sustainable development in Rwanda.

Through its participation in the commemoration activities, Rwanda Management Institute reaffirmed its dedication to preserving the memory of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and contributing to the continued building of a united, resilient, and prosperous Rwanda.
