RWANDA MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE (RMI) LEADERSHIP AND STAFF COMMEMORATE THE 31st ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1994 GENOCIDE AGAINST THE TUTSI IN BISESERO.

On 05th June 2025, RMI community including the leadership and staff went to Bisesero Genocide Memorial Center in Karongi District in Western Province where 40,000 people were killed in 1994, to remember the fight of those who resisted their perpetrators for over two months before being exterminated, when the whole world had turned its back to the Tutsi who were being killed and also they granted a support to Pelagie Mukamana, the survivor of the 1994 genocide.

Bisesero Genocide Memorial Center is among the four  proposed as Rwanda national monuments and now it is counted among the UNESCO World Heritage Centers.

RMI community commemorated and paid tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Bisesero Memorial Site, where more than 50,000 thousand victims lie buried.

In her remarks at Bisesero Genocide Memorial Center, the Director General of RMI, Dr. Charline MULINDAHABI, acknowledged that the commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi provides an opportunity for the RMI community to stand together and draw lessons from Rwanda’s tragic history to fight genocide ideology, hatred, in Rwanda and in the World in general.

“Let us acknowledge and remember that we had a terrible history of hatred, to the point of killing people because of their race. Here we heard the story of Bisesero, where the Tutsi refused to die at the mercy of the killers rather in their bravery, defended themselves for two months only until they were abandoned by their government led by Habyarimana. Let this history always remind us that we should always repent and condemn evil wherever it comes from. Let us condemn the ideology of genocide, tell the truth about what happened in order to fight those who deny the genocide”. “If we put down this weapon, God forbid we will be dragging ourselves back to the darkness we were in before the RPA stopped the genocide when they were led by His Excellency Paul Kagame”, Mulindahabi said.

Julienne Ntakirutimana, the Deputy Mayor of Karongi District in charge of economic development at the Bisesero Genocide Memorial Center said that,: “The genocide perpetrators who killed the people you see lying here took a lot of time to prepare, they were taught and they put what they learned into practice. I would say they ate genocide and they suck it but we are also grateful that we have got the government which cares to its people. And , the promise is that we will continue to teach until the genocide perpetrators and the survivors learn to live together without harming each other,” Ntakirutimana said.

Pelagie Mukamana, the survivor of the 1994 genocide, said that she was very happy to see God's angels coming to visit her and give her support. "I am very happy, I was lonely. I didn't know that I would find someone close to me. But today, I saw a surprise of people that I do not know, may God bless them. This support is going to help solve many problems I have", Mukamana said.

During RMI community tour of the Bisesero Genocide Memorial Center, the RMI community placed flowers to remember more than 50,000 victims buried in there.

UNESCO recognizes the Bisesero Genocide Memorial Center as part of its heritage, and it is among eight recognized genocide memorial centers in Rwanda.
